Uroa,

Uroa is an understated fishing village on Zanzibar's eastern coast, fronted by a wide beach and shallow reef lagoon. Seaweed farming, traditional dhows and ordinary village life give travellers a genuine coastal base without the atmosphere of a self-contained resort.

At low tide, women work seaweed lines and families explore tidal pools; at higher water, fishing boats and dhows cross the turquoise lagoon. Palms rather than dense development back much of the broad, pale shoreline.

Reef boats, dhow sails, paddling and fishing excursions add movement, while a respectful village walk explains how local livelihoods follow the sea. Stone Town provides an accessible historical contrast across the island to the west.

The drier coast

June to October brings calm seas, dependable sunshine and the clearest conditions for reef snorkelling and diving. December to February is warm and largely dry, another easy period for lagoon outings and quiet days along the east coast.

March to May

The long rains

March to May carries heavy rain and rougher water that can curtail marine activities; November's short rains are lighter. The daily tide remains equally important, determining swimming depth, boat departures and when tidal flats can be explored safely.

Is Uroa a good place for a quiet, authentic Zanzibar stay?

Yes. Uroa is a traditional fishing village on the east coast, unassuming and unhurried, with a broad reef-protected beach and everyday village life rather than a resort strip — well suited to travellers who want the real coast.

Can you swim at Uroa, or does the tide go out?

Uroa sits behind a fringing reef, so the water is calm, but the lagoon fills and empties with the tide. Swimming is best around high tide; low tide opens the flats for walking, rock-pooling and seaweed-farm visits.

What is seaweed farming at Uroa?

Villagers, mostly women, tend rows of staked seaweed lines across the tidal flats between the tides. It is a defining sight of the east coast and a living part of Uroa's economy, and low-tide walks let you see it up close.
