Mara & Amboseli Classic

Mara & Amboseli Classic is a tailored two-park safari journey through Kenya's Maasai Mara and Amboseli, designed by Nobu around the individual traveller — the most-loved introduction to an African safari, available across comfort levels from Essential to Private Collection.

Narrative introduction

Every great safari story has a beginning, and this is the one most travellers dream of. The Maasai Mara, where the plains run to the horizon and the big cats own the morning. Amboseli, where elephants move in long grey lines beneath a mountain that seems to float above the clouds. Two landscapes that could not be more different, and together they tell the whole story of Kenya in a single journey.

Mara & Amboseli Classic is the safari people picture before they ever board the plane — and then find is even bigger than they imagined. Unhurried game drives in the company of guides who read the land like a first language. The Mara's predators at dawn. Amboseli's great herds at the foot of Kilimanjaro at dusk.

This is the classic, met slowly and entirely on your terms — the perfect introduction for a first-timer, and a journey seasoned travellers return to all the same.

Experience moments

  • Dawn with the cats — Roll out before the light in the Mara, coffee in hand, as lions finish the night's work.
  • The mountain reveals itself — Wait for the cloud to lift and Kilimanjaro to crown the Amboseli plain.
  • Elephants at eye level — Sit quietly as Amboseli's famous herds pass close, generations moving together.
  • The migration, if the season is right — Witness the river crossings in the Mara, the oldest story on earth.
  • A lunch where the view earns it — Stop where the land deserves it; let the afternoon stretch.
  • Firelight and big skies — End each day where the conversation slows and the stars take over.

How you'll travel

From an intimate Essential camp close to the action to a Private Collection retreat with the plains — or the mountain — to yourself, both parks are yours at the level that suits you. Every stay is chosen for the story it adds: a Mara vantage over big-cat country, an Amboseli veranda framed by Kilimanjaro. Not just a bed, but a place in the picture.

Make it yours

Lift off at dawn over the Mara by balloon. Add a guided walk with a Maasai guide. Spend a day with a local community on their terms, not as a stop on a route. Stretch the journey with Lake Nakuru's flamingos and rhinos on the way between parks, or let the coast finish the story with a few days by the Indian Ocean.

The rhythm of the journey

  • Arrive in the Mara — Fly in by light aircraft; the plains greet you from the air. Settle into camp, an evening game drive as the light turns gold.
  • Into big-cat country — Full days following the predators and the herds at your own pace. Long lunches, unhurried afternoons; the migration in season.
  • South to the mountain — Transfer to Amboseli — by light aircraft, or overland through the Rift if you'd like to see more — and trade open savannah for elephants and Kilimanjaro.
  • Beneath Kilimanjaro — Days among the great herds, the mountain shifting with the light; a sundowner as it glows pink at dusk.
  • A last morning — One more drive before you fly out, or continue your wider Kenya journey.

Most travellers spend 3 nights in the Mara and 2–3 in Amboseli. We'll shape the exact rhythm around you.

Kenya's classic safari, in context

The Maasai Mara, in south-west Kenya, is the northern reach of the great Mara–Serengeti ecosystem and the stage for the annual wildebeest migration (roughly July to October). Amboseli, in the south near the Tanzanian border, is famous for its large, relaxed elephant herds and uninterrupted views of Mount Kilimanjaro. The two pair naturally into a single Kenya journey — typically six to eight nights — linked by a short light-aircraft hop or an overland transfer. Nobu designs this classic for every season and every kind of explorer, from first-timers to returning safari-goers.

Told by a traveller

Our driver, Toni, was incredibly professional and attentive. Imelda provided invaluable support throughout the planning process. A highlight was the unforgettable sunset aperitif organized for us in Amboseli.

Why combine the Maasai Mara and Amboseli?
They show two sides of Kenya in one trip: the Mara's big cats and open plains, and Amboseli's elephants framed by Kilimanjaro. Different landscapes, different rhythms, one seamless journey.
When is the best time for this safari?
July to October brings the Mara migration and clear mountain views in Amboseli; the green season (November to June) means fewer travellers, newborn wildlife and dramatic skies. Big cats and elephants are resident year-round.
How many days do you need?
Most travellers spend six to eight nights across the two parks — roughly three in the Mara and two to three in Amboseli — but we'll shape the length around your wider journey.
Is it suitable for first-time safari-goers and families?
Yes. This is the classic introduction to an African safari, and we design it for first-timers, families and seasoned travellers alike, including mobility-conscious options.
