THE DHOW CHAPTER

Time on a traditional-style wooden boat along the Swahili coast.
Day trips leave in the morning for a reef or sandbank, with snorkelling and lunch, returning late afternoon. Sunset sails usually last two to three hours. A crew runs the boat from Shimoni on Kenya's south coast, Fumba or Stone Town on Zanzibar, or Shela on Lamu.
A dhow trip is not always a sailing trip. Day boats usually run on engines, so ask how much is under sail.

Where and when
Kenya's south coast, Zanzibar and Lamu. Calmer seas roughly December to March, rougher June to September.
Time, fitness and age
A reef day lasts about ten hours and suits confident swimmers. Ask about ages for young children; try-scuba starts at 12. Non-swimmers, and anyone prone to seasickness from June to September, should choose a sunset sail.
What it costs
Shared day trips are a moderate spend, priced per person; private boats differ. Your proposal confirms it. Kenya's marine parks charge non-resident adults US$25 a day; confirm at booking.
Rules
Never stand on coral or chase dolphins. Single-use plastic is prohibited in Kisite-Mpunguti. Dress modestly in Stone Town and Lamu; swimwear stays on the boat and the beach.

Are there life jackets on a dhow?
Not always. Safari Blue's dhows carry life jackets; Pilli Pipa's list only life rings, so ask for child sizes. Kenya's maritime authority urges everyone aboard to wear one, and warns of rough seas until December 2026.
Can I swim with dolphins from a dhow?
Better not, though KWS lists the swim: research at Kizimkazi found swimmers change how dolphins behave. Choose a boat that keeps its distance; see watching Kizimkazi's dolphins responsibly.
Can I sail a dhow from Lamu?
Peponi Hotel in Shela, for one, offers sunset sails. The UK advises against all travel to Lamu County except Lamu Island and Manda Island. The US says "Do not travel" to the whole county, islands included (checked October 2026).
Can I sleep aboard a dhow for several nights?
Multi-day dhow trips are listed from Lamu, but their usual routes to Pate and Kiwayu lie where the UK advises against all travel. Zanzibar's operators sell day trips and sunset sails.
