Mafia Island or Zanzibar?

Zanzibar is the island for beaches, Stone Town and choice; Mafia is the island for whale sharks. Whale sharks are commonly seen from about October to March, with the best chances from about November to January; nothing is guaranteed. Beach-first travellers, first-timers and families should choose Zanzibar; divers, snorkellers and wildlife travellers should choose Mafia, ideally for three or four nights after a Nyerere or Selous safari.

Mafia is not a beach island that happens to have whale sharks. It is a whale-shark-and-reef island with some beach. That sentence saves most people the wrong trip. The island lies off the Rufiji delta, roughly 190 to 215 km south of Zanzibar in a straight line. Its tourism is a few lodges around Chole Bay on the east coast, inside the Mafia Island Marine Park. The water is the draw: reef-sheltered, rich with coral and turtles and, in season, whale sharks feeding in the shallow channel off Kilindoni. Zanzibar, by contrast, is a full holiday island with a city, a spice belt and more than a hundred places to stay on Nobu's property list. They are not competing for the same traveller, and this page is about working out which traveller you are.

The detail

Access from the safari. Zanzibar has direct scheduled flights from the Serengeti airstrips (about 1 hour 40 minutes non-stop on Auric Air, longer via Arusha on Coastal) and from Nairobi (about an hour and a half). Mafia is reached almost entirely through Dar es Salaam: a scheduled flight of roughly thirty minutes on from Dar on Coastal Aviation or Auric Air, with several departures most days. We found no reliable published non-stop Zanzibar–Mafia service, so plan on connecting through Dar. From the northern circuit this means a connection in Dar. From Nyerere (Selous) in the south there is a scheduled light-aircraft connection of about two hours, and the pairing is natural. Light-aircraft bag limits of 15–20 kg in soft bags apply. The practical rule: a Serengeti safari flows to Zanzibar, and a Nyerere or Ruaha safari flows just as easily to Mafia.

What it costs. Mafia's lodges are few, small and mostly mid-to-upper tier. There is no guesthouse strip and no large resort, so the floor is higher than a Zanzibar guesthouse, though the ceiling is far lower than a Zanzibar private island. The marine park charges a daily fee per person; confirm the current rate at booking. Whale-shark boat trips are an extra. Both trips need one inbound insurance policy (about US$44 per adult for Zanzibar cover), bought for your first port of entry: mainland cover if you start in Dar es Salaam, Zanzibar cover if you land in Zanzibar first. Both islands also need a Tanzania visa for most nationalities. Over a four-night stay the totals are often close; the difference is what you get for the money.

Entry rules depend on your nationality and dates, so this is general information, not legal or immigration advice.

Beach and tide. Zanzibar is the easier answer for most people. Its north coast is the usual choice for swimming through most of the tide, and its east coast is a long white shelf with the tide's rhythm to learn. Chole Bay, where most of Mafia's lodges sit, is a mangrove-edged, reef-enclosed bay rather than a long strand. It is lovely to look at, and the snorkelling is at your feet, but at low water the bay empties toward the reef. Mafia's longer beaches are on the west and south coasts, away from the marine park. If the brief is "a beautiful beach outside the room", choose Zanzibar.

Water and wildlife. Mafia is the stronger answer for wildlife. Whale sharks gather off Kilindoni on the west coast from roughly October to March, and you snorkel with them from small boats under a code of conduct. In the core months sightings are common but not certain. For dive seasons and operators on both islands, see Diving in Zanzibar. Green turtles nest on nearby Juani, and hatchings are seasonal. Zanzibar's best-known water is Mnemba Atoll, which is shared with other boats that morning. Look for operators who can explain where the park fee and boat income reach the villages on Chole and Juani; a travel designer can suggest some.

Culture and things to do. Zanzibar has Stone Town, spice farms, Jozani Forest and boat trips. Mafia has the ruins on Chole Island and the village across the bay, a few fishing villages, and a place where almost nothing is arranged for you.

Seasons. For Zanzibar's dry and wet months, see best time to visit Zanzibar. Mafia's reason to go, the whale sharks, is best from about November to January. Sources differ on the edges of that peak, and February is less reliable. A December trip can do both well. A July trip suits Zanzibar better, because whale sharks are generally absent from Mafia at that time.

Honeymoon vs family. Mafia suits couples who snorkel or dive and want quiet. It is a poor match for couples who want a beach, a pool and somewhere to dress up. Families with confident swimmers will enjoy it; minimum ages for boat trips are set by each operator. Families with toddlers should be on Zanzibar's north coast.

Key facts

Whale sharks: off Kilindoni, Mafia, roughly Oct–Mar, best about Nov–Jan; snorkelling only. Access: Mafia via Dar es Salaam, about 30 min on; Zanzibar direct from the Serengeti, about 1 h 40 min non-stop (Auric Air). Marine park fee: a daily per-person fee applies; confirm the current rate at booking. Beaches: Zanzibar far better; Chole Bay is a reef bay, not a strand. Diving: Chole Bay year-round, outer reefs about Oct–Feb. Seasons: Zanzibar dry Jun–Oct and Dec–Feb. Stays: Zanzibar over a hundred on Nobu's property list; Mafia a handful of small lodges.

Planning it with Nobu

A travel designer can plan the southern circuit as one arc: Nyerere's river and plains, then an island that matches the traveller. For most that is Zanzibar, as in → Southern Safari and Spice. For divers and wildlife travellers, a Mafia extension can be explored with a travel designer, timed to the whale-shark months. A travel designer will say honestly that the sea, not the sand, is what they are buying.

Is it right for you?

Zanzibar is right for you if: you want a beach outside the door; you want Stone Town and spice in the same week; you are travelling with young children; you want a wide choice of places to stay. Mafia is right for you if: a whale shark matters more than a sunset; you dive or snorkel seriously; your safari is in Nyerere or Ruaha; you are travelling between October and March; you are happy with one small lodge and a bay. Do both if: you have ten nights and a December date, which puts the whale sharks and Zanzibar's hot, dry window in the same trip.

A few things worth knowing

Good questions.
Straight answers.

The details matter. Bring anything else into your planning conversation.

Can you be sure of seeing whale sharks on Mafia Island?

No. They are wild animals feeding on plankton, and sightings depend on the season, the sea and the day. In the core months, roughly October to March, with the best chances from about November to January, boats often find them. Outside the season they are rarely seen. We never promise specific wildlife.

Can you swim with whale sharks responsibly?

Yes: snorkel only, keep your distance, do not touch them, use no flash, and choose operators that follow the local code of conduct and limit the number of swimmers per animal. Ask a travel designer which operators follow it.

Is Mafia Island suitable for non-divers?

Snorkellers, yes; the bay and the whale sharks are both snorkelled, not dived. Travellers who want a town, shops or a beach bar will find Mafia very quiet after two days.

How do I get from Zanzibar to Mafia Island?

Via Dar es Salaam: a short flight to Dar, then around thirty minutes on to Mafia, on Coastal Aviation or Auric Air. Timetables change by season, so confirm at booking. Allow a half day. There is no scheduled direct sea route that we know of.

Does Mafia Island cost less than Zanzibar?

Not usually. It has no low-cost guesthouse strip, and the marine-park fee is charged daily. What you save on excursions you may spend on the park and the boats. Choose it for the water, not the price.
