The grandparents want shade, a short walk to lunch and a proper chair. The parents want one week in which nobody has to cook or referee. The children want water, all day, at whatever time they wake. A Zanzibar villa holiday can give all three, but only if the house is chosen for the family rather than for the photograph.
The island makes two things harder than you might expect. True sole-use houses are few, and most of them are designed for couples. And on the east coast, the sea walks out for hours at low tide, so the pool does the work the beach cannot. This page is for the person organising it, usually a parent in the middle generation, who needs the shape right before anyone books a flight. For the shortlist of properties, see villas and private houses in Zanzibar; for the safari half, see multi-generational safaris.
The detail
Sole use, honestly. Only three properties in the stays data Nobu works from are offered for exclusive use, and none is a simple fit for three generations. Zanziblue at Matemwe, with three beachfront villas, is the closest thing to a whole beach house; ask Zanziblue about booking all three as one house. The other options are compared in villas and private houses in Zanzibar.
Four ways to do it. The table sets four properties side by side. Other options are in the guide.
| Property | Sleeps or rooms | Kitchen or chef | Private pool | Child rules | Walking and stairs |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zanziblue, Matemwe | Three villas of 8–10 people (website); 10 rooms on Nobu's property list | A kitchen in each villa; cook not stated | Yes, a dip pool in each villa | Family welcome on Nobu's property list; ask for child rules in writing | Not stated; ask Zanziblue |
| The Residence, Kizimkazi | Two-bedroom villas; 66 villas on 32 hectares (website) | On-site restaurants; meal plan set by the resort | Yes, 1.2 m deep | Family welcome on Nobu's property list | Long paths; ask which villas sit nearest the restaurant |
| Baraza, Bwejuu | Two-bedroom villas (website); 30 rooms on Nobu's property list | On-site restaurant; meal plan set by the resort | Yes, a plunge pool in each villa | Ask Baraza about its children's policy | Not stated; ask Baraza |
| &Beyond Mnemba Island | 12 rooms on Nobu's property list | All-inclusive on Nobu's property list | No pool listed on Nobu's property list | No more than two children under 12 on the island at once (the lodge's own sheet, dated 05/18) | Bandas 10–15 m apart on sand; boat transfer, which the lodge says does not run after dark |
Verdict. Big family with toddlers: The Residence two-bedroom villas. Want your own kitchen and the whole place: ask Zanziblue about all three villas. More than two children under 12: not Mnemba.
Meals and the chef question. A kitchen is not a cook. Zanziblue's villas come with a kitchen and dining room; whether a cook is included, and for which meals, is set by the property. Some resorts, such as The Residence and Baraza, have on-site restaurants, which suits grandparents who like a menu and parents who like not shopping. Each resort sets out what its meal plan includes. Send dietary needs with the first enquiry, not on arrival; dietary requirements while travelling explains why the brief matters. One family dinner a week, cooked in the villa or served on the beach, is worth planning for.
Pools that ignore the tide. On the east coast, where many of the villas are, the lagoon recedes hundreds of metres at spring low tide and sometimes more than a kilometre. A private pool keeps the children's day independent of the moon. The Residence states that its villa pools are 1.2 metres deep: standing depth for most adults, swimming depth for children, which still means an adult on watch. A pool that can be fenced or gated matters if you are travelling with toddlers. How the tides work explains the rhythm by coast.
Rooms for grandparents. Ground floor, near the main areas, with a walk-in shower if possible. The Residence's grounds cover 32 hectares, which means good privacy and long paths, so ask about buggies and which villas sit closest to the restaurant. At Zanziblue, give the attic to the teenagers and the queen rooms to those who prefer no stairs. At Mnemba the bandas are reported to sit 10–15 metres apart on sand, which is beautiful and slow going with a stick. The transfer is about an hour and a half by road and then a short open-boat ride; &Beyond says the boat does not run after dark, so confirm your arrival time with the lodge and plan the arrival in daylight. If anyone in the party uses a wheelchair, accessible Zanzibar covers what to check.
Safari first, villa second. Three generations rarely want the dawn starts of a safari at the end of a holiday. Put the bush first and the villa last, so the oldest and youngest recover by the pool. On light aircraft between the parks and the island, Coastal Aviation allows 15 kg per person including hand luggage, in soft bags; pack one for each person and leave the hard cases at home. Kenya safari and Zanzibar and Southern Safari & Spice both end on the coast.
Being a good guest. The villa is private, but the village around it is not. Cover shoulders and knees on the village paths and keep alcohol inside the villa. Agree staff hours and how tips are shared before you arrive. Mnemba sits in a marine conservation area with a fee of US$25 per adult and US$10 per child aged 5–15, so teach children not to stand on coral.
Key facts
Sole-use properties in the stays data: three, none a simple multi-generational fit. Whole beach house: Zanziblue, Matemwe, three villas sleeping 8–10 each. Pool depth example: 1.2 m (The Residence). East-coast tide: lagoon recedes hundreds of metres at spring lows. Light-aircraft limit: 15 kg per person (Coastal).
Planning it with Nobu
The organiser of a three-generation trip carries everyone's worries. Nobu can take the questions off your list, asking each property in writing who cooks, which villas sit together, how far the walk is to dinner and what the pool depth is. Nobu can also join the safari and the villa into one journey with one point of contact. A beautiful house can be the wrong one for your family, and we will say so.
Is it right for you?
This is right for you if the point of the holiday is time together rather than a full activity list, if you have three generations whose needs pull in different directions, and if a pool and a long lunch sound better than a busy resort. It suits families of six to ten who want their own space without losing service.
It is less right if you need a whole property with total privacy and small children: Zanzibar has few, and none of the current options is a clean fit. If there are only two generations and the children are young, Zanzibar family holiday ideas is the better page. If everyone is over 18 and wants quiet, a couples-oriented house such as those on the adults-only shortlist may suit better.
