North of Paje the kites thin out and the road narrows under the palms. Bwejuu's long beach faces the sunrise; at Michamvi, the peninsula's tip, the land turns back on itself and looks west across Chwaka Bay. Choosing among the best hotels in Michamvi and Bwejuu is choosing how much of that quiet you want to keep to yourself: a whole villa with its own pool, a resort with everything on hand, or a bungalow a few steps from the sand.
This list covers both villages. It is ordered by fit for purpose, not price, and facts come from each property's own website and from our stays file; where sources disagree, the page says so. Which part of the peninsula to choose, and why the sunset side is different, is covered in our guide to the Michamvi peninsula.
How to choose
Tide and pool. The ocean side of the peninsula sits on the same tidal lagoon as Paje: at low spring tides the water goes far out, and swimming follows the tide table. That is why private plunge pools matter so much here, and why Karafuu's natural pool is a selling point. Read how Zanzibar's tides work before you choose; if sea swimming at most states of the tide is essential, use our list of hotels with swimmable frontage.
Age rules, read closely. The Palms and Zawadi admit guests aged 16 and over, so older teenagers are welcome and the mood is adult rather than strictly adults-only. Baraza welcomes all ages. If a rule matters to you, get it in writing for your dates.
How far you want to go out. This is the quietest corner of the south-east. Kae, on the west-facing bay shore at the tip, is the sunset spot; ask us how far your chosen stay sits from it, since the walk or drive varies by property. The peninsula guide covers the area. Evenings are spent at your hotel or at a short list of restaurants, including The Rock at Pingwe and Upendo's Boho Social. Our restaurant guide covers both. Paje's livelier strip is a short drive away.
Villa or resort. Most hotels here are small. Karafuu, with more than 160 rooms, is the exception. Choose it if you want restaurants, several pools and activities on site; choose a villa property if privacy is the point.

The list
Baraza Resort & Spa
Private Collection · beachfront villa resort, Bwejuu · best for families who want a private pool
Baraza is the peninsula's family villa choice. It welcomes children of all ages, and its two-bedroom villas each have a private plunge pool, with a main resort pool too. Separate bedrooms give parents an evening after children sleep. Its own FAQ is candid that the beach is tidal and conditions change. Choose it for space and a quiet base. Look elsewhere if you want a beach where young children can paddle at any time of day; here the sea comes and goes.
The Palms Zanzibar
Private Collection · beachfront villa hotel, Bwejuu · best for couples
The Palms is a small villa hotel admitting guests aged 16 and over; ask about any exception for younger children, as its rule could not be re-read for this revision. Each villa has a private plunge pool and a terrace facing the ocean. Days centre on your own space and meals at the hotel, with Bwejuu's long beach in front. Its FAQ, like Baraza's, acknowledges the tide. Look elsewhere if you want a strictly over-18 hotel or a lively bar.
Zawadi Hotel
Private Collection · villa hotel above the beach, Michamvi · best for couples who want a view
Zawadi sits on a low cliff above a sandy beach at Michamvi, with villas that each have a private plunge pool. It admits guests aged 16 and over. The height gives every terrace a view; it also means the sand is a short walk down rather than outside your door. Choose it for a honeymoon centred on your villa. Look elsewhere if stepping straight onto the beach is the point.
Qambani Luxury Resort
Private Collection · villa estate, Michamvi · best for privacy
Qambani is a small estate of six villas in tropical gardens, built in an open-air style drawn from Swahili palace architecture, with direct access to the sea. It suits couples or a small group who want to be left alone. Its own pages do not state an age policy, so ask before travelling with teenagers. Ask too which of its six villas have private pools.
Karafuu Beach Resort & Spa
Signature · beachfront resort, Michamvi · best for families who want a resort, with a natural pool for low tide
Karafuu is the peninsula's big resort. Its own site gives 166 air-conditioned rooms in seven categories (our stays file says 150), several pools and six restaurants and bars, and puts it about 50 minutes from the airport. Its standout is a natural sea pool reached along a 200-metre beach path, which the resort says lets guests swim in the ocean at low tide. The resort also says it has replaced plastic water bottles with glass. Choose it for facilities and the resort's low-tide natural pool. Look elsewhere if you came for intimacy.
Upendo Beach Boutique Hotel
Elevated · small beachfront villas, Michamvi (Pingwe shore) · best for a social beach restaurant
Upendo is a small collection of villas and suites on white sand, with a spa and its beachfront restaurant, Boho Social, which opens daily and takes outside bookings. That makes it more sociable than the villa hotels: a good fit for travellers who want a quiet room and a lively lunch. The trade-off is the same: non-residents come for the restaurant. Upendo does not publish a room total on the pages we read; which villa or suite you would have is the question to settle.
Evergreen Bungalows
Essential · beachfront bungalows, Bwejuu · best for simplicity
Evergreen is the peninsula's simple option: beach bungalows on the sand, ocean-front rooms and palm-grove garden rooms, a family-and-friends banda, mosquito nets and breakfast included. There is no air conditioning; the hotel relies on fans and the sea breeze, and you fall asleep to the sound of the water. Choose it for a barefoot stay at a lower spend. Look elsewhere if you need air conditioning, a pool or resort service.
If none of these fit
For more choice and a livelier evening, see the best hotels in Paje or, farther south, Jambiani. For whole houses, see villas and private houses; for a couples' shortlist across the island, the adults-only list.
Breezes Beach Club & Spa, Anna of Zanzibar, Echo Beach Hotel and Sand Beach Boutique Hotel are also on this stretch. Their own websites could not confirm current details in October 2026, so they are not ranked here. Breezes is the name many searchers expect; ask about board, beach frontage and kite access before you consider it.
The peninsula's lagoon is a working place. Keep clear of seaweed lines and photograph people only with their permission; the seaweed farming story explains why.
Planning it with Nobu
The peninsula suits travellers who already know what they want from a beach stay: privacy, a pool and a long, empty shore. A travel designer can match the property to the people travelling and plan around the tide times for your dates. Which of these properties Nobu works with is settled when we plan your journey.
The peninsula suits you if you want quiet, small hotels and a sunrise beach, with the sunset at Michamvi Kae within reach by car. Choose Paje instead if you want cafés, kitesurfing and other travellers on foot, or the north coast at Nungwi or Kendwa if an easy swim from the beach matters most; the tide still decides the day.
