Zanzibar honeymoon

A Zanzibar honeymoon works best on the quieter coasts — the south-east peninsula around Michamvi and Bwejuu, Matemwe in the north-east, or a private island such as Mnemba — in a small villa stay, with one night in Stone Town at the start rather than the end. A common shape is the island as the last five to seven nights of a safari, making it the exhale rather than the whole story.

After the wedding, the honeymoon is the one part of the year you may not want to plan. The honeymoon that works in Zanzibar is not the one in the brochure. The island has a loud north and a quiet east, large resort hotels and small private houses, and a tide that empties some beaches twice a day. The difference between a wonderful week and an ordinary one is almost entirely in the choosing — which coast, which stay, whether Stone Town is one night or none, and where the island sits in the trip. Our honeymoon safari page covers the bush; this one is the island.

The detail

Which coast for privacy. For a honeymoon the question is not "which beach is best" but "which beach will leave you alone." The south-east peninsula — Michamvi, Bwejuu and the top of Jambiani — has the island's lowest density of large resorts and a handful of small villas. Matemwe and Pongwe on the east coast are as quiet, with Mnemba Atoll a short boat ride from Matemwe. Nungwi and Kendwa in the north are the least tide-affected and the busiest, with the sunset-bar crowd; they suit a night or two if easy swimming matters more than seclusion. Paje is the kitesurf village, lively and young, and the wrong place for a quiet week unless you kite. For tides by coast, see Zanzibar tides, and for which beaches stay swimmable at low tide, see Zanzibar beaches you can swim at low tide. For the full list of quiet beaches, see Quietest beaches in Zanzibar.

Adults-only and private-island stays. Our stays data marks 19 properties on the island and Pemba as adults-only or adults-oriented. The full list is on Best honeymoon and adults-only hotels in Zanzibar. These three are a good place to start, one per coast: Anna of Zanzibar in Bwejuu, Matemwe Retreat in Matemwe and Kilindi in Kendwa. Anna of Zanzibar has 5 rooms and Matemwe Retreat has 4, both adults-oriented on Nobu's property list. Kilindi has 15 rooms and is marketed as adults-only on booking sites. Each property sets its own policy, so confirm the age limit and policy with the property before you choose.

For a private island, &Beyond Mnemba Island is the one: twelve bandas on a sand island with its own reef, among the highest rate bands on Nobu's property list. It has one family banda, so the family mix is worth knowing when you book. The reef around the island is a managed conservation area with a fee, reported at US$25 per adult; keep off the coral and take nothing. The ocean is the same from a 268-room resort; the breakfast is not.

Stone Town — one night, or none. Our honest view: one night, at the start. Arriving from a safari, a night in the old town — a rooftop dinner, a dawn walk before the lanes fill, the market — gives the island its history before the beach gives it its rest. Doing it at the end means leaving a villa for a city. Skip it altogether if you have fewer than five nights or if you have already done the Swahili coast; the carved doors will wait.

The safari-first shape. Our recommended order is bush first, island second. Safari mornings start early; the island does not need you to start at all. A typical honeymoon runs seven to nine nights in Tanzania or Kenya, then five to seven on Zanzibar. Southern Safari & Spice is the shorter southern version, built around Nyerere's rivers. Flying the other way, island then bush, means finishing on dust and dawn starts; it suits early risers who want the bush last. If Zanzibar is the whole honeymoon, Shores of Zanzibar is the island on its own, and seven nights is a good shape: two coasts, or one coast and Stone Town.

What to do together. The usual shape of a couple's island days is a dhow sunset from the north coast, a snorkel over the Mnemba reef (Mnemba Atoll snorkelling), a dawn walk through Stone Town (the Stone Town walking tour), and a long lunch by the water. Book the snorkel and the dhow through your hotel, so that the boat and its safety kit are known before the day.

Small things that matter. Tell the property it is a honeymoon and let it say what it can arrange for your dates. Zanzibar is a Muslim-majority island, so dress modestly off the beach, keep public affection discreet, and expect alcohol to be easier to find at resorts than in village streets. Pack one modest outfit for Stone Town. The moon matters too: spring tides fall around full and new moon, which makes east-coast low tides more extreme. The long rains run roughly March to May, and many hotels close for some of April and May, so read the best time to visit Zanzibar guide before you fix the wedding date.

Planning it with Nobu

The honeymoon can be designed as one story rather than two bookings: the safari and the island with the same designer, the same WhatsApp number, and a simple connection so that the transfer day asks little of you. The small houses above are the starting point. A travel designer can check which ones take children, and tell you plainly when a famous name is the wrong fit for the two of you. Plan your journey.

Is it right for you?

You have spent a year planning a wedding and the one thing you want from the honeymoon is not to plan. You would rather have four quiet rooms than four restaurants, and you want to be sure the beach outside the window is the beach in the photograph. This is right for you if privacy and ease matter more than nightlife, and if the idea of safari dawns followed by island nothing sounds like the correct order of things. It is less right if you want a crowd and a DJ — Nungwi or Kendwa, happily — or if you are bringing children from a first marriage, in which case Zanzibar with kids is the better start. If the whole honeymoon is the bush with no island, see the honeymoon safari page.

A few things worth knowing

Good questions.
Straight answers.

The details matter. Bring anything else into your planning conversation.

Which part of Zanzibar is most romantic?

For privacy, the south-east peninsula (Michamvi, Bwejuu) or Matemwe in the north-east, in a villa with fewer than twenty rooms. For the least tide-affected swimming and sunsets, Nungwi or Kendwa — at the cost of company.

Is Mnemba Island worth it for a honeymoon?

If the spend allows, yes: twelve bandas, a private reef and nothing else. The alternative is to stay at Matemwe and snorkel the atoll by boat.

Should we do the safari before or after Zanzibar?

Before. Safari days start at dawn; the island asks nothing of you. Finishing on the beach is the order we recommend.

Can we skip Stone Town on a honeymoon?

Yes, and with fewer than five island nights we would suggest it. With a week or more, one night at the start is worth the carved doors and the rooftop dinner.

Can a Zanzibar hotel help with a vow renewal or a small ceremony?

Some smaller villas can arrange a sunset blessing on the beach, and the details depend on your dates. A legally binding wedding is a separate process, covered on our Zanzibar wedding page.
