Crater Highlands
to Natron, on Foot

Price on request

Fit walkers go from Empakaai’s crater lake down the Rift wall to Lake Natron.

6–8 nightsTrekNgorongoro · Empakaai · Natron

The journey

Start high, on a crater rim in Maasai country, and walk down to the Rift floor.

This Ngorongoro highlands trek leaves the safari circuit behind. You walk down into Empakaai Crater to its soda lake, camp three nights on the high ground, and descend the Rift wall almost to Lake Natron, with Maasai guides, an armed ranger from the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Authority (NCAA) and donkeys for the kit.

It suits fit walkers who want the land itself, not a game drive: long days, cold nights up high, a steep descent and a hot Natron. Wildlife is a bonus and flamingos are never promised. For vehicles and big game, choose Tanzania Classic.

Highlands first, then the Rift floor: a slow way to reach Natron, shaped on your terms.

Moments along the way

Slow ground,
long descent.

01

Down to a soda lake

Walk about an hour down to Empakaai’s soda lake; the climb back takes longer.

02

Armed ranger, Maasai guides

The conservation authority requires an armed ranger on walks; Maasai guides lead and donkeys carry kit.

03

Hotter, drier, lower

The trail drops off the escarpment into hotter, drier air; carry three litres of water.

04

Ask before you photograph

Maasai homesteads line the route; NCAA permits photographs of people only at designated cultural bomas.

05

Lengai at midnight

Optional: a midnight start for Ol Doinyo Lengai’s rim, climbing steep, loose ash.

06

Water at the end

A guided walk up the Engare Sero stream to waterfalls and pools.

Where you’ll stay

Each stay adds to the story.

Choose a comfort level for the nights in Arusha and on Ngorongoro’s rim, from Essential to Private Collection. The three trail nights are tented camps with crew and donkeys, and little phone signal. Stays near Natron are few; we confirm what is open.

A route with room to breathe

Here’s how it comes together.

Arusha → Ngorongoro rim → Empakaai Crater → Rift escarpment → Lake Natron → Arusha. Three nights are in camp on foot; road or flight links the ends. Your proposal confirms times.

A sense of the days

The rhythm of the journey.

Seven nights typically: Arusha, rim and Empakaai one each, escarpment and Natron two each. Six drops the rim night; eight adds a day.

Good to know

The highlands and Natron,
in context.

The Crater Highlands are a chain of volcanic craters on the Great Rift Valley’s western edge in northern Tanzania. Empakaai, an 8 km-wide caldera, holds a soda lake, and NCAA puts its west rim near 3,200 m. Beyond it the Rift wall falls to Lake Natron, about 600 m above sea level and outside the conservation area, with the active volcano Ol Doinyo Lengai to its south. This Ngorongoro highlands trek links them on foot.

Government advice, checked October 2026: the US rates Tanzania Level 3, Reconsider travel (31 October 2025). The UK advises against all but essential travel only within 20 km of Mozambique’s Cabo Delgado border, and notes some parks are remote, so evacuation can be difficult. Neither names the Crater Highlands or Lake Natron. The UK Air Safety List names Tanzania-certified airlines, which are banned from commercial services to, from and within the UK. Read both before travelling.

Malaria risk covers Tanzania below 1,800 m, including Lake Natron. Empakaai’s west rim is near 3,200 m, and the UK notes altitude sickness is a risk in parts of Tanzania; Natron is hot and the trek is strenuous, so see a doctor first. Tanzania asks for a yellow fever certificate from travellers arriving from Kenya. This is general information, not medical advice — consult a travel clinic.

When to go

Pick your moment.
Not just a month.

A seasonal snapshot for the Crater Highlands and Natron. Track conditions and heat matter as much as the calendar.

Aug / The usual walking window

Dry tracks, hot lowlands.

NCAA stresses June to December for Empakaai and Olmoti. Tracks are dusty and the lowlands hot. Operators favour July to October for the Natron road; October can bring first showers.
