Zanzibar or Diani after a Kenya safari?

Choose Diani for the simplest beach finish to a Kenya safari: you fly from the Mara to Nairobi's Wilson Airport, then about 1 hour 15 minutes on to Ukunda, roughly five hours door to door, and you never leave Kenya or apply for anything new. Choose Zanzibar if you want a second country's worth of story — Stone Town, spice farms, dhows and a wider choice of coast — and are happy to add a Tanzania visa, the island's mandatory insurance and an international flight. As a rule, three or four nights after the safari points to Diani; five or more earns Zanzibar.

Last checked: October 2026.

By the last night of a safari, with the dust in everything, the sea starts to sound like the right idea. Both answers are good. Diani is a long, pale beach south of Mombasa with a reef offshore, forest behind and a flight connection short enough that you can leave the Mara in the morning and swim in the afternoon. Zanzibar is a different proposition — not a beach but an island nation in miniature, with a UNESCO-listed old town, a living Swahili culture and coastlines that behave very differently from one another. The honest comparison is less "which beach is prettier" than "how much more do you want from the ending".

The detail

Logistics — the deciding factor for most. Safarilink's morning flights from the Maasai Mara reach Wilson before midday. From Wilson, Safarilink flies to Ukunda, the airstrip for Diani, on an afternoon flight of about 1 hour 15 minutes, and Diani's hotels are a short drive from the strip. Safarilink flies from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to Zanzibar. Kenya Airways and Precision Air also fly from Nairobi's main airport, Jomo Kenyatta International, to Zanzibar. Times change by season, so they are set at booking. Full routings are in our Nairobi to Zanzibar guide.

Paperwork. Diani asks nothing of you that the safari did not. Zanzibar is Tanzania: a visa costs US$50 single-entry for most passports, while US and Irish passports pay US$100 for a multiple-entry visa, and Zanzibar's inbound insurance costs US$44 per adult. Flying from Nairobi straight to Zanzibar makes the island your first port of entry, so the Zanzibar policy is the one you need; UK government guidance (read Oct 2026) says you only buy cover for your first port of entry. Your Kenyan eTA usually survives the side trip: a single-entry eTA stays valid for re-entry after a visit to Tanzania, while your eTA is still valid and you have visited no non-EAC (East African Community) country. A stop in a non-EAC country, such as a Dubai connection, means a new eTA. The official site, etakenya.go.ke, sets the rule. Since 5 October 2026 the eTA application also includes compulsory travel health insurance; check the price and cover on the official portal when you apply. Detail lives in our visa and insurance guides.

Beaches and tides. Diani is one long, reef-protected beach facing east, more forgiving through the tide cycle than most, though low tide still exposes reef flats and seaweed gathers in the windy months. On Zanzibar, the north (Nungwi, Kendwa) is similarly forgiving through the tide cycle, while the east coast's lagoons drain far out at low water — the mechanics are in Zanzibar tides explained.

Culture. This is where the two part company. Diani's story is forest, reef and the Digo villages behind the beach — a quiet, uncomplicated place to do little. Zanzibar has Stone Town, the carved doors, Forodhani's night market, spice farms, Jozani's red colobus and a Muslim island culture that shapes the call to prayer and daily life; off the beach that means covering shoulders and knees, and during Ramadan eating and drinking discreetly in public, as our Zanzibar dress code guide explains. At the old slave market, closed by treaty in 1873, Christ Church Cathedral now stands on the ground where enslaved people were sold, with a memorial and underground chambers that call for an unhurried, sober hour — see the slave market and the cathedral. If you want to end a safari with history as well as sea, Zanzibar is the only one of the two that offers it.

Cost. Room rates on both coasts depend on the property and the season, so we quote them for your dates rather than generalise. What reliably tips the arithmetic is the extras: Zanzibar adds the visa, the insurance, an international flight and a longer transfer day. On a three-night finish those add up; over a week they matter less.

Planning it with Nobu

We design both endings and will tell you honestly which one suits you. Bush to Beach is our Kenya-coast journey — Mara or Amboseli, then Diani or Watamu — for travellers who want the shortest line to the sea. Kenya safari and Zanzibar is the two-country version, the Mara followed by Stone Town and the island coast, with the visa and insurance covered in the planning.

Is it right for you?

Diani is right for you if you have three or four nights, want the least possible travel between the last game drive and the first swim, are travelling with young children or anyone for whom an extra border is a burden, or simply want sea, forest and quiet. Zanzibar is right for you if you have five nights or more, want an old town and a culture as much as a beach, are curious about dhows, spice and Swahili food, or want the wider range of stays — from a Stone Town guesthouse to a private island. If you are torn: Diani for the short finish, Zanzibar for the long one.

A few things worth knowing

Good questions.
Straight answers.

The details matter. Bring anything else into your planning conversation.

Can you fly directly from the Maasai Mara to Zanzibar?

Not non-stop. You change at Wilson, where Safarilink flies to Zanzibar; book with the current timetable in hand.

Is my Kenyan eTA still valid if I visit Zanzibar and fly home from Nairobi?

Usually, yes. A single-entry Kenyan eTA stays valid for re-entry after a trip to Tanzania if you visit no non-EAC country and return within 90 days; the official site, etakenya.go.ke, sets the rule.

Does Diani cost less than Zanzibar?

Room rates depend on the property and season on both coasts; the reliable difference is the extras — Zanzibar's visa, mandatory insurance, international flight and longer transfer day — which weigh more on a short stay than on a week.

Which has the better beach for swimming at low tide?

Diani and Zanzibar's north coast are both more forgiving through the tide cycle, though Diani's low tide exposes reef flats; Zanzibar's east coast drains at low water and is better chosen for its lagoon views, kitesurfing and quiet.

Can I do both?

You can, but it rarely rewards the travel. If you want two coasts, Zanzibar and Pemba, or Diani and Watamu, make a more coherent pair than crossing a border for a second beach.
