Kenya's safari country and Zanzibar are close on the map and awkward on the ground, because Nairobi has two airports and the one your safari flight lands at is not the one most airlines to Zanzibar leave from. Solve that, and the Mara-to-island day is as neat as its Serengeti cousin: breakfast with the plains, lunch in the air, the Indian Ocean before sunset. This page is about one trap and two ways round it.
The detail
The two Nairobi airports. Safari flights from the Mara, Amboseli, Samburu and Laikipia land at Wilson Airport, a light-aircraft field a few kilometres south of the city centre. International and most regional jets, including Kenya Airways to Zanzibar, leave from Jomo Kenyatta International (JKIA), about 18 km away on Mombasa Road. There is no airside link, no through check-in and no shared luggage system between them. The road between them takes 25 to 35 minutes with the expressway and an empty road, 45 to 60 minutes on a normal day, and up to 90 minutes in rush hour or after an incident on Mombasa Road. That is the trap: a Mara flight that lands at Wilson at 12:15 and a JKIA departure at 13:30 look fine on paper and are not.
Route one: Wilson straight to Zanzibar. Safarilink flies from Nairobi's Wilson Airport to Zanzibar, currently about 14:00 non-stop, with older timetables showing a stop at Mombasa. Its Mara flights reach Wilson in late morning, around 12:15 on a typical connection, which makes this the simplest same-day routing from the Mara: one airport, one operator, one bag weigh-in. The Zanzibar arrival is around 15:30 to 15:45. Safarilink's published allowance is 20 kg including hand luggage, so pack soft bags, and immigration is cleared at Wilson before boarding. Timetables change through the year; check your date before you build the day around it.
Route two: Wilson to JKIA, then a jet. Kenya Airways flies JKIA–Zanzibar about twice a day, with departures clustered in the early morning, around midday and in the early evening. Precision Air has flown the route, so check current service. Air Tanzania added a morning flight in August 2025, departing 06:50 and landing 08:10 on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Later listings show a different departure time and days, so the current TC233 timing needs checking before you plan around it. The morning flight suits a night in a Nairobi hotel rather than the end of a safari. This route gives you more departures, a larger aircraft and the airline's standard checked-bag allowance, at the cost of the cross-town transfer. The safe rule: land at Wilson at least four hours before an international departure from JKIA. That covers collecting bags at Wilson, the drive, JKIA's road security check, the airline's check-in cut-off, and the queue that forms when several wide-bodies leave together. Do not let anyone sell you a two-hour connection.
| Route one: Wilson → Zanzibar | Route two: Wilson → JKIA → jet | |
|---|---|---|
| Airport you leave from | Wilson (same one the Mara flight lands at) | JKIA, about 18 km by road |
| Departures | Safarilink from Wilson; about 14:00 | Kenya Airways about twice daily; Precision Air has flown it; Air Tanzania some days |
| Bag limit | 20 kg including hand luggage, soft bag | Airline's standard checked allowance — varies by fare |
| Buffer after the Mara flight | About 1 h 45 (12:15 landing, ~14:00 departure), one airport | At least four hours at Wilson before the JKIA departure |
| Island arrival from the Mara | Mid-afternoon, around 15:30–15:45 | Early evening flight, at your stay after dark |
Timings that work. A mid-morning Mara departure lands at Wilson around 12:15. Route one puts you on the island in mid-afternoon and at a north- or east-coast stay in the early evening. Route two, with a four-hour buffer, rules out the midday jets and pairs with the Kenya Airways early-evening flight, which puts you at your stay after dark: fine for Stone Town, a long drive in the dark for a beach arrival. That long dark drive is the part of the day most likely to go wrong, so after an evening jet a Stone Town night is the safer choice. If you are starting from a Nairobi hotel rather than the bush, every JKIA departure is open to you, including the Air Tanzania morning flight on its three days; the midday Kenya Airways flight lands with the afternoon still ahead of you.
Arriving in Tanzania from Kenya. Zanzibar is Tanzania, so you need a Tanzania visa and Zanzibar's inbound insurance before you fly. Apply for the e-visa before you travel. Because Zanzibar is your first port of entry on this route, the insurance to buy is Zanzibar's, from the Zanzibar Insurance Corporation through Visit Zanzibar, for up to 92 days; mainland cover applies only if you arrive on the mainland first. The Zanzibar visa guide and what to know before you go have the details. Two points are specific to this routing: the East Africa Tourist Visa you may hold for Kenya does not cover Tanzania, and Kenya is on Tanzania's yellow-fever list, so carry your certificate with your passport.
Same-day feasibility. From the Mara: yes, by route one, with a few hours' slack. From Amboseli, Samburu or Laikipia: usually, because their morning flights also reach Wilson in good time; the specific airstrip matters. From Nairobi city: yes, any day. The thing that breaks a same-day plan is not distance, it is choosing the JKIA option with a thin buffer. If your safari ends with a late-afternoon game drive you would hate to cut short, add a Nairobi night and take the morning flight to the island.
Key facts
Flight time: ~1 h 30–1 h 50. Airlines: Kenya Airways (JKIA, about twice daily), Safarilink (Wilson, about 14:00 non-stop), Precision Air (JKIA, has flown the route), Air Tanzania (JKIA, 06:50 Mon/Wed/Fri at its August 2025 launch). Wilson–JKIA: ~18 km; 25–90 min by road; no through check-in. Buffer: land at Wilson ≥4 h before a JKIA departure. Same day from the Mara: yes, via Safarilink Wilson–Zanzibar. Before you fly: Tanzania e-visa (the East Africa Tourist Visa does not cover it), Zanzibar inbound insurance, yellow fever certificate when coming from Kenya. Time zone: no change.
Planning it with Nobu
A travel designer plans this day backwards from the safari's last flight: which Mara airstrip your camp uses, the sequence of morning flights, and the route that fits your dates. Then the island stay is built around the arrival time rather than the other way round. Tell us where the safari ends at → Plan your journey.
Is it right for you?
You are finishing a Kenya safari and want the Indian Ocean the same day; you can travel with a soft bag under 20 kg on the Wilson route, or you are happy to trade an afternoon for a bigger aircraft on the JKIA route. If you would rather not cross a border at the end of a safari, the Kenyan coast is a shorter hop with no visa, and → Zanzibar or Diani weighs the two honestly. If your safari is in Tanzania, → Serengeti to Zanzibar is the page for you.
