• Arrive and into Tarangire — Land near Arusha and travel to Tarangire; settle into camp, an afternoon drive among the elephants and baobabs as the light turns gold.
• The river and the herds — Full days in Tarangire at your own pace, following the elephants to the water. Long lunches, unhurried afternoons.
• To Lake Manyara — A short transfer to Manyara for the tree-climbing lions, the flamingo shallows and the green Rift wall.
• The highlands and the Crater — Up into the Ngorongoro highlands; a full descent to the Crater floor for a day among its remarkable density of wildlife.
• A last morning — One more drive before you travel out, or continue onto the Serengeti or the coast.

The northern circuit, in context

Tanzania's northern circuit lies inland from Arusha and Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO). The Ngorongoro Crater is a collapsed volcanic caldera holding one of the densest concentrations of wildlife in Africa, including a population of the rare black rhino. Tarangire, best known for its large dry-season elephant herds and ancient baobabs, peaks roughly June to October. Lake Manyara, a shallow alkaline lake beneath the Rift escarpment, is famous for tree-climbing lions and seasonal flamingos. The three sit within a few hours of one another and pair naturally into a single journey of around six nights by road, often combined with the Serengeti.
