The Wild North

Narrative introduction

North of Mount Kenya the land changes character. The green gives way to ochre and thorn, the air dries, the horizons lengthen, and the wildlife turns rare. This is the frontier — the country the early explorers called the Northern Frontier District — and it still feels like the edge of things. Here the rivers are everything: ribbons of doum palm and life threading through arid hills, drawing elephant, lion and the strange, beautiful species that live nowhere else.

The Wild North runs between Samburu and Meru, two of Kenya's most characterful and least crowded reserves. Samburu is desert drama — the Ewaso Ng'iro river cutting through red earth, and the "Samburu Special Five": the reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, found in this dry north and almost nowhere else. Meru, across the way, is the lush, jungly wilderness where Joy Adamson raised Elsa the lioness in Born Free — green, watered, wild and gloriously empty of crowds.

This is Kenya for the second-time traveller, or the first-timer who wants the road less driven — frontier country met slowly, on its own terms.

• Across to Meru — Move to Meru's green, watered wilderness — Born Free country, lush bush, almost no other vehicles.
• Deeper, or wider — A Samburu cultural morning, a birding day, or quiet river time — shaped to what moves you.
• A last morning — One more frontier sunrise before you fly out, or continue south to Laikipia or the Mara.

The northern frontier, in context

Samburu and Meru lie north and east of Mount Kenya, in the drier country once known as Kenya's Northern Frontier District. Samburu National Reserve — with neighbouring Buffalo Springs and Shaba — straddles the Ewaso Ng'iro river and is best known for the "Samburu Special Five": reticulated giraffe, Grevy's zebra, gerenuk, beisa oryx and Somali ostrich, dry-country species rarely seen further south. Meru National Park, to the east, is a lusher, well-watered wilderness famed as the setting of Born Free, where Joy and George Adamson raised and released Elsa the lioness. Both reserves are far quieter than the southern parks. Wildlife concentrates along the rivers year-round; the drier months (roughly June to October and December to February) make game easiest to find. Nobu designs northern journeys — typically three to five nights — for travellers who want rarity, drama and space.
