From the volcanoes you return through Kigali — a capital of clean hills, good coffee and a moving, honest reckoning with its past — and on to Nyungwe, one of Africa's oldest rainforests, where chimpanzees call through the canopy and a walkway sways high above the trees. The rhythm of the journey

• Arrive in Kigali — Land and ease into the green calm of the capital; a first evening over good coffee and city views.
• North to the volcanoes — A scenic drive up through terraced hills; settle in beneath the Virunga as the peaks gather cloud.
• Into the mountains — An early briefing, then the climb to your gorilla family — the encounter at the heart of the journey. The afternoon is yours, or a golden-monkey trek if you'd like more.
• Kigali, with depth — Return south for a thoughtful day in the capital: markets, coffee and a visit to a place of memory and reconciliation.
• South-west to Nyungwe — On to the rainforest; a canopy walk and, the next morning, chimpanzees and colobus among ancient trees.
• Forest, or savannah — A second forest day, or swing east to Akagera for Big Five plains and a lake cruise.
• A last morning — One more forest walk or city moment before you fly out, or continue your wider journey.

Most travellers spend 2 nights by the volcanoes, 1–2 in Kigali and 2 in Nyungwe, with Akagera added if the route calls for it. We'll shape the exact rhythm around you.

Rwanda's gorilla circuit, in context

Volcanoes National Park, in north-west Rwanda, is the country's mountain-gorilla destination — its trailheads roughly a two-and-a-half to three-hour drive from Kigali International Airport, which makes it among the most accessible great gorilla encounters anywhere. Kigali, the capital, is known for its cleanliness, calm and its national memorial. Nyungwe, in the south-west, is one of Africa's oldest rainforests, home to chimpanzees, colobus troops and a canopy walkway. Akagera, in the east, has been rewilded to hold the full Big Five across lake-strewn savannah. The circuit links naturally into one journey — typically six to eight nights — entirely by road in a compact country. Gorilla trekking runs year-round; the drier months (roughly June to September and December to February) make forest trails firmer.
