Narrative introduction

It begins in the dark, with sound. Long before you see them, the forest of Kibale fills with the calls of chimpanzees waking in the canopy — a wild, electric chorus that pulls you up the trail at first light. Then movement overhead, a face among the leaves, and you are standing beneath our closest living relatives as they feed, groom and argue their way into the day.

Forest & Savannah Passage is Uganda told at its full breadth. From Kibale's primates you cross to the open country of Queen Elizabeth — elephants on the flats, lions in the fig trees, a channel thick with hippo — and then north to Murchison Falls, where the entire Nile is squeezed through a gap barely seven metres wide and thrown into a roar you feel in your chest before you see it.

Three landscapes, one unbroken passage: rainforest, savannah and the great river. This is the journey for travellers who want all of Uganda, met slowly and shaped entirely around them.

• Arrive and settle — Fly or drive west toward Kibale, the country greening as you go. Ease into your forest lodge; an evening walk as the canopy goes quiet.
• Into Kibale — An early briefing, then into the forest with guides for the chimpanzee encounter at the heart of the journey. A wetland walk at Bigodi in the afternoon, or time to rest.
• South to Queen Elizabeth — Trade rainforest for savannah; an evening game drive beneath the Rwenzori as the light turns gold.
• Channel and plains — Full days on the savannah and an afternoon cruise on the Kazinga Channel; the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha if your route runs south.
• North to the Nile — A scenic transfer to Murchison Falls; settle above the river as the light softens.
• The falls, by land and water — A launch cruise to the foot of the falls and a drive to the top; game drives across the northern plains for giraffe, lion and elephant.
• A last morning — One more drive or river moment before you fly out, or continue your wider journey.

Uganda's forest-and-savannah route, in context

Kibale Forest, in western Uganda, holds one of the highest densities of primates in Africa and is the country's premier destination for chimpanzee trekking, by permit. Queen Elizabeth National Park lies just south, straddling the equator beneath the Rwenzori, known for elephants, the hippo-rich Kazinga Channel and the tree-climbing lions of Ishasha. Murchison Falls, to the north, is Uganda's largest national park, where the Nile is forced through a narrow gorge before spreading across savannah grazed by giraffe, lion and elephant. The three link into a single journey — typically seven to nine nights — by road and, where it helps, light aircraft. The drier months (roughly June to September and December to February) ease forest trails and game viewing. Nobu designs this route for travellers who want the full breadth of Uganda.
