You spend your first days where the heart races: lions in the long grass, elephants beneath Kilimanjaro, dawns that you'll remember for the rest of your life. Then you fly down to the coast, and the tempo changes entirely.

Kenya's Indian Ocean shore is one of the loveliest in the world — powder-white sand, water the temperature of a warm bath, coral reefs and the lateen sails of dhows on the horizon. At Diani, the beach runs for miles beneath palms; at Watamu, marine parks and tidal lagoons sit beside the old Swahili coast and the ruins of Gede. After the dust and the early starts, this is where the journey softens — long lunches, slow swims, the sound of the reef, nothing at all to do.

This is Kenya in two movements — the wild and the water — and the quiet genius of doing both in one journey.

Bush & Beach is two stays in one journey, each chosen for its half of the story. Inland, from an Essential safari camp close to the action to a Private Collection retreat with the plains to yourself. On the coast, from a relaxed Essential beach house to a Private Collection villa with the ocean at the foot of the garden and a cook of your own. We match both ends to the same level — or let you splurge on the beach as the reward — entirely as suits you.

Choose your wild: the Mara for big cats and migration, Amboseli for elephants and Kilimanjaro, or both. Choose your shore: Diani's long palm-backed beach, or Watamu's marine parks and Swahili history. Add a diving or kite-surfing course, a dhow sail, a deep-sea fishing day, or a trip to Lamu's car-free old town. Travelling as a family or a honeymoon? This journey was made for both — we simply shift the balance.

The rhythm of the journey

• Into the wild — Fly into the Mara or Amboseli by light aircraft. Settle into camp; an evening game drive as the light turns gold.
• Safari days — Full days following the cats, the herds and the elephants, at your own pace — the intense, unforgettable heart of the journey.
• Down to the coast — A scenic flight south to Diani or Watamu. The tempo drops the moment you smell the sea.
• Ocean days — Beach, reef and dhow — swim, snorkel, sail, or simply do nothing. The Swahili coast at its own gentle pace.
• A last morning by the sea — One more swim before you fly home, unwound and full of it.

Most travellers spend 3–4 nights on safari and 3–4 by the sea. We'll shape the split and the pace around you.

Bush & Beach is designed bespoke, so the price reflects your journey — the safari is the bigger driver, the coast can be tuned up or down. Kenya's coast, in context

Kenya's Indian Ocean coast runs for some 500 kilometres of white-sand beach, coral reef and old Swahili trading towns, an easy flight from the safari country inland. Diani Beach, south of Mombasa, is a long palm-backed strand known for warm, calm water and watersports; Watamu, to the north, sits beside marine national parks, tidal creeks and the 13th-century ruins of Gede, with Malindi and car-free Lamu further up the coast. The reef means warm, swimmable water much of the year; the best beach weather falls roughly December to March and July to October, between the long and short rains. Pairing bush and beach typically means three to four nights on safari and three to four on the coast, linked by a short internal flight.
