Family Plains & Coast
Family Plains & Coast is a tailored East Africa journey by Nobu, combining a family-paced safari in Kenya or Tanzania with a soft Indian Ocean coast finish. It is designed around children's ages, attention spans, transfer tolerance and the kind of wild moments the family wants to share.
Narrative introduction
A family safari has to hold more than sightings. It has to hold snacks, naps, questions, nerves, wonder, shorter legs, early mornings and the particular magic of watching a child see an elephant properly for the first time. The best family journeys do not dilute the wild. They pace it so everyone can meet it well.
Family Plains & Coast begins with the safari: the Mara, Amboseli, Laikipia, the Serengeti or another area chosen for season, guiding and transfer sense. The days are private where it matters, flexible in the middle, and honest about what children can enjoy. Then the route softens on the coast - Zanzibar, Diani, Watamu or another Indian Ocean base where the family can stop moving and let the safari settle.
This is not simply Bush & Beach with smaller people included. It is a journey designed from the start around family rhythm.
Experience moments
- The first elephant - A private vehicle, a patient guide and no rush to move on before the moment lands.
- Camp between drives - Pool time, sketching, stories, rest and enough space for children to reset.
- Wildlife with context - Tracks, dung, birds, bones and guide-led curiosity, not only the headline animals.
- The coast exhale - Bare feet, warm water, reefs, dhows and a slower ending after safari mornings.
- One family story - A route that lets different ages remember different things, all from the same journey.
How you'll travel
We choose stays around family fit: room layout, child policies, guiding style, transfer time, pool safety, food flexibility and how much independence older children want. A simple, kind lodge may serve the family better than a showier stay in the wrong place.
Make it yours
Build the route around younger children, teenagers, grandparents or a milestone family trip. Add private guiding, a child-friendly walking element where suitable, a marine activity at the coast, or a slower final day before flying home. We can keep the safari in Kenya, make it Tanzania-led, or choose the country that best fits the ages and season.

The rhythm of the journey
- Arrive gently - A gateway night if needed, especially after long-haul flights.
- Safari first - Four to six nights in one or two wildlife areas, keeping transfers and early starts realistic.
- Private pace - Drives shaped around energy, with downtime protected instead of treated as empty space.
- Coast close - Three or four nights by the Indian Ocean for swimming, rest and a different kind of discovery.
- Home without rushing - A final transfer plan that does not undo the rest of the journey.
Most families start with around 10 nights. We shape the route around ages, school dates, heat, transfer tolerance and wildlife season.

What it costs
Family Plains & Coast is designed bespoke. The quote depends on season, room configuration, child ages, private vehicle needs, flight routing, coast stay and accommodation tier. We build from live rates and explain the family-specific cost drivers clearly.
Family safari and coast, in context
Kenya and Tanzania both work well for family safari and beach journeys, but in different ways. Kenya often gives simpler logistics and a strong Mara, Amboseli or Laikipia base with the Kenyan coast nearby. Tanzania offers Serengeti, Ngorongoro and a natural Zanzibar close. The right choice depends on ages, season, appetite for flights and how much beach time the family needs after safari.
Trust reinforcement
Family design lives in details: room layouts, transfer lengths, guide temperament, downtime and realistic expectations. Nobu plans those details before the route is presented.

- What is the best length for a family safari and beach trip?
- Around 10 nights is a strong starting point: enough safari for depth and enough coast time to rest.
- Should families choose Kenya or Tanzania?
- Kenya is often simpler logistically; Tanzania gives scale and pairs naturally with Zanzibar. We choose based on ages, dates and travel style.
- Do families need a private vehicle?
- Often, yes. It gives control over drive length, stops, snacks, bathroom breaks and how long you stay at a sighting.
- Is the coast important after safari?
- For many families, yes. Safari is thrilling but early-starting; the coast gives everyone space to soften before flying home.
- Can this suit teenagers?
- Very much. Teenagers may enjoy more active elements, photography, walking where allowed, marine activities or a stronger adventure feel.
